Mart Stam A3-1 armchair, rare by UMS 1947-1948
Mart Stam A3-1 armchair, rare because its a very early by UMS 1947-1948
Original A3-1 armchair by Mart Stam for UMS.
The fact that this chair bears the rare "UMS" stamp—standing for Utrechtsche Machinale Stoel- en Meubelfabriek (Utrecht Machine Chair and Furniture Factory)—without the addition of "Pastoe" confirms that it is a very early example, dating from between 1947 and early 1948.
Furthermore, shortly after the model was featured in the magazine Goed Wonen, production shifted from UMS to—most likely—the Van der Kley furniture workshop in Badhoevedorp.
This makes it a unique chair with a traceable history regarding its age.
The chair shows signs of use consistent with its 80-year age. Despite this and its delicate design, the chair remains very sturdy.
